Rich snippets (microdata, microformats, and RDFa) have been around for a while. The few lines of text that appear under every search result in Google are designed to give users a sense for what’s on the page and why it’s relevant to a customers’ query.

Most e-commerce site owners would like to have their products highlighted among other search results in search engines. Rich snippets can help you with this. All you need is to integrate them into your Magento theme.
You’ll notice that Magento actually already incorporates this technology for certain elements. Below you can see how Magento handles the breadcrumb in an example from Illamasqua.com
1 2 3 4 5 6 |
<ul class="breadcrumb shop-breadcrumb nav" itemscope itemtype="http://data-vocabulary.org/Breadcrumb"> <li><a href="/" title="Home"><span itemprop="title">Home</span></a></li> <li><a href="http://www.illamasqua.com/shop/" title="Shop" itemprop="url"><span itemprop="title">Shop</span></a></li> <li><a href="http://www.illamasqua.com/shop/products/web-exclusives/" title="Web Exclusives" itemprop="url"><span itemprop="title">Web Exclusives</span></a></li> <li><span class="active" itemprop="title">Create Your Own Nails Set</span></li> </ul> |
