Google Maps API

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

Okay, this one gets filed under Coding, and is going to involve a bit of a rant, but some common sense I suppose as well.

The Google Maps API is the most awesome thing I’ve played with recently – which probably just goes to show how far away from the pulse my finger well and truely is! In the office at 9xb we’ve been developing things for a few clients, including the facility to punch in your postcode and seeing the stores (etc) that are closest to you. This is pretty cool stuff, and dead handy and user focused.

Well…. last week it stopped working. At first, it seemed like it was just aglitch in the matrix, but it soon became apparent from the Google Maps API discussion boards that it was more of a problem than anyone thought.

It appears that Google has pulled all support for GeoCoding locations via British Postcodes. This all stems (I’d've thought) from Royal Mail owning the Postcodes. Thats where the common sense comes in. Why should we have ever been able to do it in the first place? I suppose it was nice of Google to let us do it so long, but its been a real kick in the teeth, with both sites we’re working on (or that have gone live) – and for the millions of other people that rely on the technology!

Anyways, I suppose now that it is broken, or “fixed” as I’m sure Google would prefer to call it, I suppose we can do nothing but sit back and accept the fact that Google should be forced to buy Royal Mail! People interested in the on-going situation should keep their eye on this discussion thread amongst others on the Google Maps API discussion boards

AKP York ROCK Band

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

Went to see my … well, lets give him his proper title… Boss! Last night at Fibbers Barfly in York.

He’s been in AKP (not quite sure what it stands for .. Alexander King Project, Auto Kinetic Playback, Autokinetic Playback – i’d think the first!) for what must be monkey’s years, but this was my first outing. I’ve only been at 9xb for about 8 months now, but as I like to brown nose, I’ve been saying for half that time that I’d get to a gig to see him.

I can honestly say that it was the best live music I’ve seen in a fair while!! On the night, there wasn’t any completion to be fair, but they rocked and did their stuff.

Anyways, Alex (the big man in question) posted a video of their new song “I am component” on YouTube, and I thought I’d pop a link up for anybody wanting to take a look at their work.

Anyone wanting to check out some more AKP can head over to AKP’s official site and their MySpace page for some more tracks.

Sharpfolio

Thursday, November 1st, 2007

Well, as promised… a week or so late, the sharpfolio site is now active!

I’ve already gone off it to be honest, but it took a while to recode, so I’ll stick with it for a while !

Not sure what to do with my portfolio, think I might just be uploading stuff I work on in the future for the Sharpfolio bit of things, and redoing the portfolio page to keep all the legacy stuff. Think I might also have a clean out of things that I’m not brilliantly proud of anymore.

Anywho, there is a small list of things I want to get working still… these being:

Permalink rewrites – which I stuffed up whilst rewriting the theme. The default ones work just fine though, and before the revamp, they were the same.

Stopping the sharpfolio stuff appearing in the blog section. Pretty sure I could do this quickly, but the pagination would probably be wrong.
