It happened again…

Thursday, February 23rd, 2006

… I was talking to someone on the phone asking for some amendments… I come off the phone, finish what I was doing, then turn to my notes from the call. Can I as hell read my own writing !!

PC

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2006

I’ve been having increasing troubles with my PC here at work, with continual crashes and VPU recovery errors. Came in this morning… computer wont start. At all. Spoke to the boss, drove home, picked up a ’spare’ PC and brought it into work. First port of call, swap the power supplies. Quids in, works fine now !

Found out we had a 3 year return to base warrenty, but we dont really want to be without the machine, as 1) i’ve already fixed it, and 2) i won’t be able to do any work. So, being cheeky, I phoned the supplier and described what the fault was etc. They said to take out the power supply and return it. After testing, they’ll send a new one out. Game on! Truely some decent customer service I think.

Entourage X

Tuesday, February 21st, 2006

Entourage is used as the mail client on all the Macs in the office. I came in this morning to be greeted by a question regarding Entourage, and why our designer couldn’t get it to open. It basically said the database was corrupt, and when you click rebuild, it says something about a -40 error whereby it cannot read/write to the disk. After a bit of investigation I found that the original release version of Entourage X had a 2gb limit on said database. Our designers’ machine had reached this magical number, and my boss’ was hovering at 1.94gb. Whats the solution ? Download the update to Office X here and this will give you 4gb. Its taken a fair time for the guys in the office to ‘ding’ at 2gb, but there is a better solution. Close Entourage, now hold down the option key (alt) and relaunch. Rebuild the database. I’ve done this on our third machine and it decreased the database to 170mb from 514mb. Lets see how well it does on the two machines with problems….

How many Adagency Staff does it take to change a light bulb ?

Friday, February 17th, 2006

Well, okay, not a light bulb, but a fax machine ink cartridge. This office seems to be full (okay, its just Jac) of people who can’t read or use common sense. The instructions are written clearly on the fax machine! Its not like I have some special Matrix like powers…

Jac would like me to point out she wasn’t tall enough to read it.

Sunbird

Thursday, February 16th, 2006

There was talk in the office AGES ago about a shared calendar (i.e. all machines had access to a central calendar) – so that we could all keep track of if each other were in the office etc…

Fast forward to last week when Petula from MAP upstairs asked the same thing as she’d been reading about Ms Exchange server’s ability to do just that.

Now, previously, we’d decided that i’d build a system. The trouble with our office is that I work in a graphic design business and i’m the only one in the office with a PC. Everyone else uses Macs and there are also two older Macs without OSX which are about to be replaced with one iMac (or so my boss keeps telling me)… anyway, back to the issue at hand….

Enter Sunbird. I have NO idea how I came across this this afternoon, but it fulfilled all my needs. Cross-platform, open-source and can be used with an Apache server (which my machine uses as a test platform and to serve our internal job tracking system). I had a few issues at first setting up Apache to get Sunbird to work. I ended up adding the following to my http.conf (in no order) :

LoadModule dav_module modules/mod_dav.dll
AddModule mod_dav.c
DAVLockDB C:/Apache/htdocs/webdav/DAVLOCK
<directory C:/Apache/htdocs/webdav/>
DAV on
Authtype Basic
</directory>

Then, from within SunBird it was easy enough as :

File|Publish (to create the remote calendar for everyone else to connect to.

Then;

File|Subscribe to Remote Calendar
WebDav – path : http://10.0.0.4/webdav/adagency.ics
Finally, Pick a colour, and name it something memorable.

Easy stuff.

We now have an internally shared calendar !

Randomness

My mate has his login name in MSN as:

call me old fashioned, but i like a dump to be as memorable as it is devastating

i just thought it was highly amusing and wanted to share it with everyone !!

I’m back…
